Coalville Town 4-1 Leiston

As good as it gets at this level said a local, and he was probably right as Coalville Town turned on the style in the second half to record their first win of the season.

Clear cut chances were few and far between in the first half hour but the home side started to get more and more of the possession as the half went on and took the lead in 38 mins. A free kick on the left was swung into the box and defender Chris Robertson got the vital touch.

But after a closely fought first half with chances about equal, it was Town that turned on the style in the second half and blew Leiston back to Suffolk in the chilly North West Leicestershire air.

Ex-Tamworth player Rhys Hoenes was causing Leiston problems on the right flank, cutting in with his left foot. He reminded me a little in the style of ex-pro Lloyd Dyer.

Clearly Leiston became aware of him and central defender Harry Knights made himself known to Hoenes with a poor late challenge which saw the Coalville wide man crashing to the ground right in front of me.

Knights despite is audible complaining was rightly yellow carded and maybe justice was done as Kian Taylors free kick seemed to catch keeper and defenders out as he curled the ball into the top corner for 2-0 in 50 mins.

Four minutes later it was 3-0, Coalville breaking with pace and precision. Hoenes the provider and Luke Shaw (no not that one) finished calmly.

In 64 mins it was 4-0, when striker Tim Berridge found himself in far too much space after some more slick play and fired a rising shot past Leiston keeper Sam Donkin.

Coalville were playing very well so they will be slightly disappointed that they allowed the visitors a consolation goal in 71 mins from Finlay Barnes.

A fierce low shot eluded Deeney, Coalville should have taken heed, the same player had tested Deeney in the first half.

Leiston kept going Hammond hit the top of the crossbar as they fought to the end but the result was in no doubt.

Plenty of work to be done by the new joint managerial team at Leiston which includes former Premier League player Darren Eadie.

Coalville’s only concerns ahead of their home game on Tuesday are the shoulder injury to Rhys Hoenes and a leg problem to experienced former Football League keeper Saul Deeney.

The attendance at Owen St was 281, that gate will rise if they continue to play football of that quality and on that basis I suggest that Coalville Town are Leicestershire’s 2nd best team.
